Core Day
2/3/13
Up at 3:00 am again, eating nutritiously has reduced my sleep to 6 hours before I wake up feeling rested. I never knew it did that. We'll see over time if it holds up or I'm just crazy. I've always been a 7-8 hour of sleep guy but 6 gives me another hour everyday. I'll take it. Yesterday went great. It was a recovery day and even though I did end up doing several pull-ups, pouring concrete, and chasing mine and my brothers kids around the yard, I did manage to take it easy overall. My chest, triceps, and back are very sore. I finished my nutritional goal yesterday 250 calories under the planned number of 1860. I feel very good about avoiding that pancake I made for my son near bedtime and instead opting for a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese! It was not the easiest thing I've ever done. I mentioned my personal motto yesterday and want to follow up and explain what that is to me and where it comes from. I have noticed in my life that short mottos repeated often enough can offer strength in a time of weakness. Just as religion offers strength to believers, believing in a motto can be very useful when staring down a hard craving or workout choice. It is the act of believing that gives your brain the power to overcome. A couple years back, I attempted a 100 mile endurance run and although I did not finish, I learned a lot of things about myself. During that run, I ran for over 19 hours in the woods on a single track trail. Several times I reached a point of pain that was approaching my tolerance. By using simple positive statements and repeating them to myself, alone, in the dark woods, I was able to push through many obstacles. "I Can," I will." Over and Over while freezing and suffering. I ran 65.4 miles before I could go no farther and to this day, I still wonder if I could have limped a few more miles. Since that race, I have elaborated on the positive mantras of "I Can" to include phrases like, "I am the master of myself." I am no expert, I'm just a guy who wants to do something exceptional. But I believe by writing your own mantras or creed and repeating it to yourself in a time of weakness, you will reach past many mental barriers. The end of my creed finishes with, Burn the Ships, Feed the Wolf! In ancient times it is said that Julias Cesar crossed the Rubicon river with his army and before marching to war, he ordered the ships be burnt. The flashing sign here is that THEY CAN"T GET HOME WITHOUT SHIPS! In view of these circumstances the army marched, fought, and conquered knowing it was the only alternative to death. There are many variations on the origin of this phrase but the end result is usually the same. I have had starts on fitness programs in the past and due to the incompleteness of some of those goals, I am very cautious about announcing a new public fitness goal. I'f you keep it to yourself, you have less shame. Well I'm finished with that line of thought. I have decided that in one year, I will have what I want. I am not hiding, I am proclaiming that I'm going for it. It will be mine, I HAVE BURNT THE SHIPS! As lore would have it, there was once a native american elder speaking to his grandchildren. "There is a fight raging inside me," he said. "And it is between two wolves." He walked slowly and deliberately around the fire. "One of the wolves is lazy, full of excuses, undisciplined, jealous, prone to quit, full of weakness and regret," he went on. " The other wolf is made of excellence, hard word, determination, discipline, courage, confidence, and kindness," said the old man. " The same fight is going on inside each of you," he asserted while pointing and looking his grandchildren in the eyes. " The same fight is going on in everyone, everywhere," he finished and started to walk away. As he did one of his grandchild ask "But which one wins?" The old man turned around slowly and after a long pause he said, "the one you feed." I'm headed outside in a bit to put in an intense workout. I will be one step closer to my goal. Forward Progress. Friends, if you are stuck in a rut or setting your own goals, write down what you want and decide which direction to take and by all means, BURN THE SHIPS and FEED THE WOLF!
